Damon Deane and Goldie Estelle Patrick Deane celebrated their anniversary on November 23, 2006.

Goldie Estelle Patrick Deane, 29, Program Officer, DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation. Lives in Washington, DC.
Thinking he was simply participating in a college Campus/International Pal icebreaker, Damon unwittingly started a lifelong partnership when he paired himself with Goldie. Dazzled by her charismatic personality, afro and big beautiful smile, he also charmed the Detroit native with his vigor for life, sincerity and love for music and dancing (and the fact that the Trinidad & Tobago native can actually dance).
"Damon was the first guy I think I felt free with," said Goldie. "While we dated he didn’t always understand or agree with what I was doing, but he never imposed his opinions on me and I loved that."
Becoming fast friends, they realized that community-building and strong families are key shared values. They saw in one another the person they want to build a family with. One night in Brooklyn, an unconventional proposal poured out of Damon as they danced to their fave artist, Buju Banton.
“I told him yes, and we sort of just left it there. On the ride back to DC from New York, we talked about the slow dance and decided ‘well then, I guess we’re engaged!’’ said Goldie. “It was the funniest thing ever because he then looked over at me and asked ‘what do I have to do next?’”
Inspired by traditional West African ceremonies that unite their families, they decided to first marry in a private spiritual ceremony surrounded by family dressed in white. Outfitted in a simple but elegant white sheath, Goldie walked down the aisle escorted by her father to India.Arie’s “Purify.” A traditional Roman Catholic wedding in keeping with Damon’s religion followed months later.
Anniversaries are marked by watching their wedding DVD, reading wedding cards and reflection.
"Goldie is always pleasant, spirited and caring," he said. "I've never met anyone like her."
